STAY HYDRATED WHILE TRAVELLING

Travelling is exciting, but it often disrupts normal hydration routines. Tight schedules, limited access to water or toilets, long flights, and outdoor activities can all increase the risk of dehydration. Many travellers do not realise they are dehydrated until symptoms appear.

Dehydration during travel can lead to headaches, dizziness, fatigue, dry skin, and reduced concentration. In hot climates or during active trips, the effects can become more serious. Staying hydrated is essential to enjoying your journey and maintaining your health.

Below are practical and easy tips to help you stay hydrated while travelling, without compromising your experience.

START HYDRATING BEFORE YOU LEAVE

Hydration should begin before your trip starts. Drink one to two glasses of water before leaving home and again when you return. Starting your journey well hydrated helps your body cope better with long travel times and physical activity.

CARRY A REUSABLE WATER BOTTLE

Always carry a water bottle with you while travelling. This makes it easier to drink water regularly, whether you are at the airport, on a road trip, sightseeing, or hiking. Refillable bottles are especially helpful in places where water access may be limited.

DRINK WATER DURING FLIGHTS

Air travel increases the risk of dehydration due to low humidity levels in aircraft cabins. Drink water consistently throughout the flight, even if you do not feel thirsty. Avoid waiting until the end of the flight to hydrate, as dehydration can build up quickly during long journeys.

LIMIT CAFFEINATED AND ALCOHOLIC DRINKS

Caffeinated beverages and alcohol can contribute to fluid loss. While it is fine to enjoy these occasionally, they should not replace water intake during travel. If you consume coffee, tea, or alcohol, increase your water intake to compensate.

USE ELECTROLYTE DRINKS FOR EXTENDED OUTDOOR TRIPS

For outdoor trips lasting several days, especially those involving hiking or physical activity, electrolyte containing fluids can be beneficial. These drinks help your body absorb and retain fluids more efficiently and replenish minerals lost through sweating. They should complement water intake, not replace it entirely.

AVOID PROLONGED SUN EXPOSURE

Spending long periods under the sun increases sweating and fluid loss. Sunburn also reduces the body’s ability to cool itself. Take breaks in shaded areas, wear protective clothing, and drink water regularly when spending time outdoors.

EAT WATER RICH FRUITS AND VEGETABLES

Food can contribute significantly to hydration. Fruits and vegetables with high water content help support fluid intake while providing essential nutrients. Good options include watermelon, oranges, cucumbers, iceberg lettuce, strawberries, and other fresh produce. These are especially helpful during hot weather or active travel days.
